I'm still conflicted. Last year I was Elvis which was very funny b/c I went to the party and a bunch of the community rabbis had rented professional Elvis costumes and I only had a homemade one.

Anyone have ideas for quality Male Purim Costumes?

How old are you? Only children dress up on Purim. Adults just get drunk.

Im dressing up as a lady who wears red nailpolish. It would be very funny if you used that idea.

Why? I bet any woman who wears red nail polish has no problem with jean skirts. Oh, and you pay the shipping!

Because everyone will realize the red nail polish is a purim joke. The Jean skirt is maras ayin even on Purim.
And can't you just ship it from work or something???.....

I don't force an American, Halloween custom onto Judaism by dressing up for Pourim. It's in poor taste.

Last I checked, it's a clear halacha that one is supposed to wear bigdei Shabbos (Yom Tov?) in honor of Purim. So if I dress up, my "costume" will probably consist of a suit.

What makes you so sure the idea of Purim costumes comes from Halloween?

At least I didn't start on "Pourim baskets" or "Sukka hops."
Shemmy
Okay, the custom itself originated from a different, non-Jewish source:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purim#Masquerading

None the less, in America, it's a direct replacement for Samhain (Halloween).

will you let your kids to dress up on purim?

i don't see how it's a replacement for halloween in america. what about israel, england (ok, scratch that, just learned that there is halloween there as well), south africa, russia, etc - is it a replacement of some local holiday there as well?

So now one of the four 'mem' mitzvos of Purim is adapted from the goyim as well?

Pre-Lent festivities, actually. (Don't forget that Lent starts 40 days before Easter, which is more or less around Purim).

I don't recall seeing anything in the traditional sources about baskets with fake nylon grass in them wrapped in celophane.......

Dude, seriously! People aren't using that to make it look like anything other than what it is supposed to be. They get whats in the store and try to make a nice presentation. Is the new rule that you have to use a brown paper bag? Tin foil perhaps?

OK, in this spirit I will dress up in a red and white velvet suit, dye my beard white and hand out candy canes to the kinderlach, and if anyone has a problem with it, I will send them to you.....

No, I will not. Nor will they take noise-makers to the esnoga or interrupt keriath hamegilla with boos or hisses.

See what K-Rebbe said. Shelah manoth and "Pourim baskets" are not analogous. Furthermore, to counter your comments re: paper bags and tin foil, one need not mimick an Easter basket to make their shelah manoth look presentable.

These days you've got all kinds of baskets and bags and boxes to choose from, but in the "olden days" they didn't exist. All that was available were either those baskets or the flimsy/cheesy Purim boxes (I mean, they're cute, but they're not exactly elegant).

Heh. I'm just imagining someone's trunk filled with bunches of bananas and cases of grape juice. They drive up to someone's house, take one of each, ring the bell, and hand them to person who answers, who now looks quite bewildered.

It's just more convenient to put the stuff into bags/baskets/boxes -- for the giver and the receiver.

I haven't really given my costume much thought. Last year, we did a family theme which I forced my husband into. The year before, Hubby announced that one should only wear what proper Jews consider shabbos attire. He was sorta (un)amused when I showed up to shul wearing my shabbos robe.

Firstly, not every sees scrubs everyday. I certainly didn't, til my recent experiences in the hospital.

Secondly, we thought the fact that we're going through treatment and stuff would make it comical. Some people thought so, anyway.
