QUOTE
In a sequence in New York, I Love You, an anthology of love stories set in Manhattan, the Israeli-American actress bundles up to play a Hasidic woman--albeit notably unencumbered by one of those tricky-to-maneuver, five-seat strollers. Could the dashing young mensch to her right be searching for just the right moment to pop the question, and get a little under-the-chupah action going? Those smiles say yes.

(Of course, judging by the tichel I'd say they're already married, but whatever.)

No way. No self-respecting yeshivish girl would walk out the door without a full face of make-up.
Jeanette
If the shaitel would be cut above the shoulder and some bangs in the front, she might pass. The scarf and raincoat look about right, but doesn't R. Falk have something to say about wearing a bag over the shoulder?

Jeanette - i think, R'Falk talks about the bag across the chest (or maybe not him but someone else).

i still don't get the plot ph34r.gif they meet on a manhattan street, start chatting and then date and get married?

I never thought I'd notice something like this but she look totally unchssidish. Maybe it's her posture, or the quality of her clothes. Maybe she looks too comfortable smiling at a man.

Huh? Not the yeshivish people I know. I find that yeshivish people are way more plain than other types of people. Maybe it's just the people I know, though.

She's looking him in the eye. He, however is not. Which is why he's more convincing.

He is a real Chasidic guy and i know him - But his Hat..
His Hat is not appropriate and its bent, not the way its supposed to be. This guy is risking his future in the community for himself and his kids when they come to the age of marrige..

the putting down the shopping bag for him to pick up was cute. i still don't get why she is wearing a scarf on her head and waht exactly they are doing there - having a date? a chassidishe couple??!

I love the comments on the page with the clip. The clip itself is kind of weird, like Elana said above, it doesn't quite add up.

I fugured it wasn't off-set since she was talking to a guy with a kipah.

QUOTE
He's too young to have such frumpy posture (that comes later). While "shidduch" dating such a Hasidic hottie as Natalie (Natanya?), I think his posture would be a little more upright.

I disagree

Pants are off set, while not shooting film...look at the film clip, she's wearing a skirt (again, this is all kind of irrelevant) [I was going to joke and ask if this was an attempt at kiruv or something]

Imagine the news story if they would actually fall for each other after this acting stint! Maybe he was willing to risk his shidduch prospects because he was confident he could woo her?

well, she is playing a jewish bride-to-be... it's very bizzare, unless they mean "bride" as in the first year of marriage and they are doing before and after the chasunah scenes...

My bad. I meant"authentic chasidish".
DeepQuest
The guy could have been more authentic if his beard wasn't chopped and his hat bent. Other then that, he's right on.

ETA: The guy's name is Karpen, a "chusid" from Williamsburg. We shall see what the fallout will be.
Kalashnikover_Rebbe
Trouble in Paradise..... The guy looks real because he IS frum, and married to boot........ But the OPS mafia seem to have made him an offer he couldn't refuse....

Hasidic actor walks off Portman movie
http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/m...tman_movie.html

First he couldn't hold Natalie Portman's hand - and now a Williamsburg Hasidic Jew-turned-actor has to give up his chance to hit it big in a Hollywood movie.

Abe Karpen, 25, a married father of three, was cast as Portman's husband in "New York I Love You," a film composed of 12 short stories about love in the five boroughs.

"I am backing out of the movie," said Karpen, a kitchen cabinet salesman. "It's not acceptable in my community. It's a lot of pressure I am getting. They [the rabbis] didn't like the idea of a Hasidic guy playing in Hollywood.

"I have my kids in religious schools and the rabbi called me over yesterday and said in order for me to keep my kids in the school I have to do what they tell me and back out," Karpen said.

...

"They wanted me to hold her hand, but I said 'no way,'" said Karpen, who proudly stood his ground. "It's against our religion. You can't even hold your wife's hand on the street."

Then came the howls of protest about his unorthodox job.

"This is when I woke up and saw that I made a big mistake. My kids mean everything to me and my community where I live means everything to me," said Karpen, who comes from a prominent Williamsburg, Brooklyn, family.

His longtime friend Levi Okunov said the Karpens had to flee the city for the weekend. "The community wants to kill him," he said.

it was very stupid of him to say.

poor guy. yeah, right, "one day i woke up and realized i made a mistake" rolleyes.gif if not for the community pressure, everything would be fine.

QUOTE
Hasidic community activist Isaac Weinberger said Karpen should have known better.

"We don't watch television. We don't go to the movies, so to be in a movie is the worst thing. It's a shame for any Hasid," he said.

Still, despite his troubles, Karpen had nothing but kind words for the film and Portman.

"She's the only one I was willing to work with," Karpen said. "I was shocked that she's a Hollywood big shot. We talked in Hebrew. ... She wants to become more religious."

the guy couldn't come up with the worse things??!!

yeah, to become more religious, especially after this. rolleyes.gif

I don't have peyot, but I'm available for the part. I'm also single and in her age range as well!
Rather sad if he has dropped out of the movie, it'd be nice to see two Jews looking like Jews in a movie.

You might be right. Something just doesn't add up. What was the guy's Hava Amina that his Rebbe would be okay with this? Unless he thought nobody would ever find out - but that's shver!
