Do you consider leprechauns, shamrocks, etc. to be religious symbols?
Goldfish
Leprechauns are pagan -- from Irish mythology; according to Wikipedia: "myths and symbolism of the four-leaf clover is endemic to Celtic traditions and may be seen transposed into the Celtic cross" so it's more Christian.

Just by the way, you missed it. Although the Feast of St. Patrick is normally on the 17th, this year, because of when Easter falls, the Vatican allowed it to be moved up to the 15th, at least in Ireland.

This is shocking! Why wasn't the Church worried about maaris ayin? After all, an observer might have thought the celebrants were commemorating yesterday's yahrtzeit of the Roman pagan emperor/god Julius Caesar.

Oysh. This is what I get for not reading my Vatican e-mails. They just got lost in the onslaught of support poor people in Israel/NY for Purim/Pesach e-mails that have overrun my account recently. Thank you so much for keeping me up to date on current Vatican policy. Have I missed anything else important?

It's like what happens when someone has a vort on 28 Iyyar when one is supposed to don sackcloth.

I wouldn't be surprised if the participants in the NY parade eat meat during Lent.

QUOTE (Internet)
The Vatican on Tuesday issued a new prayer for the Jews to be recited during some services of the old Latin Mass after Jewish groups complained that the existing one was offensive.

But Jewish groups said they were disappointed that the new version didn’t address their concerns and said it suggested that they, and all of humanity, needed to convert to [Catholicism - edit] to find salvation.
